Why: Arion Consultants along with the DNR will be holding a meeting to give an overview of the Fish & Royer Lakes Diagnostic Study and answer questions related to the study.

If you are new to the Fish and Royer Lakes Association it is important to know that the stocking of Catfish and Walleye has more than just recreational purposes. The fishery biologists report that Walleye and Channel Catfish together is the best
possible combination for Bluegill control. The state uses this approach on many lakes throughout Indiana. We are
seeing the results with bigger panfish being caught in our lakes.
So, if you aren’t a member join and get involved!
As warmer weather approaches it’s a good time to refresh our memories, on common regulations of the Public Freshwater of Indiana as well as mention permits from DNR
Things to avoid include permanent piers, sand beaches in the lake, unpermitted seawalls, and barriers to the public. Permanent piers are NOT permitted by DNR
Sand cannot be placed in the lake. With a permit from the DNR you MAY be able to place pea gravel in the swimming area.
New seawalls need permits from the DNR, it may take a few months to obtain. Link to application http://.in.gov/dnr/water/2455.htm
Some types of seawalls are bad for the lake and may not be allowed in your area.
Issues with piers sometimes arise, there has been an increase in conflicts between neighbors over piers and space for their watercraft. Indiana Public Freshwater Lakes are held in TRUST for the public by the STATE. Property owners will have property lines that go to the shorelines. once lakeward of the shoreline, there are areas in the lake referred to as riparian zones. These areas are NOT OWNED by the property owner, by being allowed to be used by the property owner as their “riparian right”.
Aquatic vegetation is important. Those “weeds” out in the lake take up excess nutrients and slow down waves, minimize erosion. and provide food and habitat for fish and other wildlife. DO NOT use chemicals to kill vegetation in the lake. You can remove a small amount of vegetation by hand.

The fish stocking program continues by popular demand and shortly we will receive 3000 Channel Catfish in the 6-8” range. We are working on several ideas to get grant funds to stock Walleye for Gizzard Shad control. This will save the association many thousands of dollars required for Walleye stocking. We will discuss this in detail at the June meeting.
